TIME TRAVEL APP

Design Brief

Time travel exists & NASA has hired me to design their travel app. This app demonstrated a common visual language, consisted of a UI that identifies where in time you are, where in time you want to go, and provide an actionable affordance to initiate time travel. This included both designs for iOS and Android tablet with native platform design guidelines.

The Approach

There are moments that we wished we could turn back time or speed up to the future or dreamed that we could escape to a different place in time. The NASA Traveler App is a time travel focused on highlighting exciting and unique experiences. Creating an interface that felt familiar and intuitive in a space that had not been explored is the biggest challenge. The approach is to come up with a digital solution that can help create the best travel memories and patient-centric experiences. In today’s digital world, we value speed and simplicity. What would an engaging, accessible, and visually attractive time travel app looks like to you?

Ideas & Sketches

I began the process of wireframing with sketches of several of the main screens. During this process, I thought about how the layout and content could be structured to satisfy user and business goals in a technically feasible way. The sketch I chose served as a guide for my digital wireframes.

Solution

When a user goes to the NASA time travel app for the first time, he/she is very excited to see the features of search location and pick a period of time they want to travel. It's something he/she always wanted to experience. On this app, he/she can clearly see everything they need to do on the first screen. He/she then immediately clicked on the time picker because he/she couldn’t resist to find out. He/she loves how the app features makes it easier for them to type in their location information without having to go back and forth to the home screen.

Once he/she got through with the time travel process, he/she noticed that the app allows them to purchase their trip with either currency or calories. The calories option really motivates them to work out and exercise -- it’s like a point system that they can save up for the amount of time they want to time travel. Because of the welcoming, friendly visuals and clear UI, he/she was able to make her time travel trip in a breeze. Not only can they come to the app to experience time travel, but also for motivation and inspiration to discover their next adventure.

My biggest take away is how to create something so different that is actually enjoyable to use. Also, really understanding users' needs, human behaviors, universal user interface along with current technologies and practices all play significant roles in the success of a great design.
